CT Sports: Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) along with Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) are set to sign a record breaking sponsorship deal with Dialog Axiata ahead of the Inter School rugby season 2017 which will kickoff next month.
It is understood that Singer Sri Lanka and Nestle Lanka (Milo), who have been the schools rugby league and knock-out tournament sponsors for the past 13 and 20 years respectively, will lose their rights to the sponsorship this year with Dialog offering a more attractive Rs 80 million sponsorship package, which is double the earlier amount.
The MoU is expected to be signed with the Schools Association and Sri Lanka Rugby soon after receiving approval from the Education Ministry.
According to inside sources, Rs 50 million will be allocated for tournaments (league, knockout and junior rugby) while the balance Rs.30 million will come under Sri Lanka Rugby for junior international tours.
Ceylon Today learns that Sri Lanka Rugby headed by President Asanga Seneviratne and his committee made a huge drive to get the deal done with their club sponsors Dialog who had been with club rugby for the past five consecutive years.
Last year Sri Lanka Rugby and the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) formed a 10 man committee to ensure that the two bodies work closely to uplift the quality of National Rugby, and this deal with Dialog is also a result of the committee’s efforts.
Arguably the most followed league in the country, the under-20, will kick off on 21 February with the participation of the top 12 schools.
Defending champions Isipathana, Royal, St. Peter’s, St. Joseph’s, Dharmaraja, St. Anthony’s will fight in Segment 1A, while Segment 2A comprises S. Thomas’, Science, Trinity, Wesley, Zahira and Prince of Wales’.
